Our Trip to Arizona!

In December our family had an amazing opportunity to stay at a friend's place in Arizona for a few weeks. We couldn't have been more excited!

It was our first flight with the kids and didn't know how things would go. We arrived at the airport in Bellingham with plenty of time to get through security, and killed a couple of hours in the airport. Then the excitement (and nervousness) mounted as we were taxied around in the airplane. Finally it was our plane's turn to take off and we were amping up... then halfway down the runway the pilot jammed on the brakes! A light had come on his dashboard that needed to be checked out. So we sat in the airplane for 45 minutes while the problem was fixed. An hour later, we were successfully in the air on our way to Arizona! The flight itself was normal and the kids did absolutely fantastic.

We arrived around 12 am in Mesa, Arizona (we were originally supposed to arrive at 10:15 pm). The day prior we had phoned ahead to the airport's taxi company (only one taxi company has the contract to pick-up at this airport) to arrange a taxi with a child seat for Brody to drive us to our house. We were assured that there were plenty of taxis at the airport that could accommodate us - no problem at all! Not sure what that meant, because once we got there, no taxi was able to "accommodate" us. We waited, phoned... waited, airport manager phoned... waited, police phoned... for around 50 minutes in the cold & empty desert parking lot before a taxi arrived (from another city) with a child seat! The taxi driver was quite the character to say the least! He had to stop 2 times to change the battery on his home-assembled cellphone which he was using as his GPS. He wasn't from the area, and didn't have a clue where we were going. After an interesting journey, we made it to our home around 1:30 am! We were certainly ready for bed at this point :)

The next morning we woke to the most beautiful blue skies!!!
We had so much to explore. Our backyard had its own putting green...

The geckos would come out in the morning to sun themselves on the brick walls. They would quickly hide under the metal art when you came too close...

"Stumpy" whom lost his tail to the house owner's grandchildren!

We all enjoyed playing a little golf!

A beautiful kitchen,
and eating area.

The kids each had their own rooms with TVs! Each morning they would watch cartoons in Melissa's bed. They loved watching different TV shows than at home.

The house we stayed in was in a gated community called Johnson Ranch. There are over 4000 houses, 3 pools, a golf course, restaurant, catch & release fishing pond, playgrounds and more. Most people had golf carts which they used to get around!

A playground with an outdoor pool behind it...

The kids couldn't get enough of swimming. The locals thought we were crazy for swimming in their winter weather of 23ÂșC! (they were bundled in sweaters)

At night we enjoyed family time, here playing Uno...
or hanging out in the backyard hot tub!

More pics to come!

Family Photos

I was looking for an updated version of a previous photo of Melissa & I

This photo happened when I was posing with Melissa in the above photo. Brody felt left out and wanted to join in!

Ice Skating

This fall we had Melissa in a set of ice skating lessons.
She really blossomed - it just seemed to click for her. It was so fun to watch!

Brody's Preschool Party Day: September & October

Brody immediately fell in love with his preschool as soon as he laid eyes their toys. In particular this mountain with a crane & tunnel is highly regarded!

Same as with Melissa when she went to Wind & Tide Preschools, they have a "Party Day" on the last class of the month to share with their parents what they have learned.

September Party Day #1
Brody dashing out from the back room ready to take his place on the "Party Line"

I was a little caught off guard by Brody's lack of participation... but hopefully in time he will become comfortable to join in with singing & doing the actions. I know he knows them - he does them at home (and the teachers say he participates in class!).

October Party Day #2
The kids got to wear their Halloween costumes! Our little man special requested to be a doctor! I managed to track down a costume which he was very excited about! (Mental note: keep adding to the college fund)

This party day played out much like the first... Brody just stood around not participating. The teachers were using a new CD player which as you'll hear had some skipping problems - hence Brody looking back at it!

I had pretty much given up videoing him... when low and behold I saw him doing something!

After the party was over I asked him to show me his favorite toys...

Melissa Starts Grade 4

A week ago today (Sept 22), school was back in session after a long summer holiday thanks to the teachers' strike. Melissa was very eager to get back to school... perhaps due to my homeschooling efforts, or maybe because she just missed her friends :) Nevertheless, getting back into a routine has been nice. Here are her back-to-school photos... she sure is growing up fast!

Extra Large Creepy Crawler

The other day Melissa was getting the mail, and on her way back she spotted this super-sized caterpillar munching away at the weeds in a crack, on the side of the street. She called me over, and I thought it was a snake (as half of it was covered up). And any of you who know me, know I don't enjoy being shown a snake! I don't know if the pictures do this guy justice, but he is abnormally big for around here. He even has an orange horn on one end! Blech!

Brody Starts Preschool!

This Tuesday (Sept 9th) Brody started preschool! Our baby is growing up so fast! These are his first day photos... he gave me only a few seconds to take his photo (he had better things to do) but they still turned out very cute. So far he is loving it (gradual entry - only 1 hr each day) and the teachers say he is doing great and listening well! Now if only I could get used to the idea, then we'd be all good!

Summer Fun

Some pics from a few of the adventures we embarked on this summer!

Brody's first theater experience, and Melissa & my first 3D movie...

Melissa took swimming lessons in the Centennial outdoor pool!

A silly pic of Brody at Montana's restaurant after a day swimming at the Brooks' outdoor pool (Katie was our server!)

Brody's first time in the dentist chair...

We made a much anticipated trip - by train - to the new American Girl store in Vancouver...

And just a few pics of the kids playing in the little rocks in the backyard...
